About Us

The Law Society of South Australia provides professional services, resources, support and benefits to its members and the legal profession in general. It undertakes community education concerning the law and the legal profession and engages in activities designed to improve access to justice.

About the Law Society

The Law Society of South Australia was established on 13 October 1879 as an unincorporated association. Since its establishment the Society has functioned as an active and integral part of the South Australian legal profession.

The original rules of the Law Club of South Australia (1851) were produced and a resolution was passed that the Rules and By-Laws be circulated amongst the Committee for their consideration. These rules were settled on 17 November, 1879.

Legal Practitioners' Professional Indemnity Insurance Scheme

Under Section 52 of the Legal Practitioners Act 1981, as amended, the Society administers this State's Professional Indemnity Insurance Scheme as approved by the Attorney-General. The Scheme provides for cover up to $2million inclusive of costs for each and every claim.

Practitioners should obtain a copy of the Scheme document to ensure that they are familiar with the terms and conditions of cover. All practitioners exercising a right of private practise are required to hold insurance.

Referral Service

Most people go through life hoping they never have to go to court or need a solicitor, but sometimes it cannot be avoided. If you are suddenly faced with a legal problem, you may be unsure of where to turn for assistance and where to seek advice. A referral to a solicitor/law firm is easily obtained from the Law Society¿s Referral Service.

Staff at the Law Society can provide you with the names of three firms that deal in the specific area of law you require. The Law Society's Referral Service is a free community service. It provides referrals to law firms according to specific areas of law, preferred geographic location, foreign language speaking solicitors and if necessary home/hospital visits by solicitors.
