In The Beginning
The hotel was built as the "Advance Hotel" in 1880 and was immediately leased by its owner, Margaret Butler, to the Hotel's first licensee, Richard Palmer. After 4 years of trading Margaret Butler took over as licencee and in 1884 changed the sign to the Royal Hotel, with it being unchanged ever since.
