We're Australia's second largest sugar milling company, with an annual turnover exceeding $300 million. We have four operating sugar mills - at Racecourse, Marian, Farleigh and Mossman. Our revenue base includes raw and refined sugar, molasses and renewable energy.
Raw sugar, our primary product, averages 800,000 tonnes annually for both the domestic market and export distribution.
Mackay Sugar was formed as a co-operative in 1988, when five formerly independent milling co-operatives in the Pioneer Valley (Marian, Racecourse, Cattle Creek, North Eton and Farleigh mills) merged and acquired Pleystowe Mill from CSR Limited.
We create raw and refined sugar, molasses and renewable energy. Raw sugar, our primary product, totals 800,000 tonnes annually for both the domestic market and export distribution.
We also hold a 25 per cent interest in sugar refining within Australia and New Zealand in a joint venture arrangement with Wilmar. Product from the refineries is marketed by Sugar Australia Limited and New Zealand Sugar Company realising over $700 million annually. Both these companies are market leaders, serving large multi-national companies that are house-hold names.
We're committed to ensuring our operations are carried out in an environmentally responsible manner. Our 'nothing is wasted' business approach (whereby we reuse and recycle our by-products) displays our dedication to not only creating a profitable future for our stakeholders, but also a sustainable future for generations to come.
As a large organisation, we know the importance of being involved with the community and providing benefits back to the community in any way we possibly can, and have in place a Community Support Program that's aimed at providing support to community groups and organisations within the Mackay and Mossman area.
We also seek to engage the communities, in which we operate, to ensure they’re kept informed of our current and planned activities.
We proudly participate in various community events, such as Mackay’s Relay for Life, the Mackay Show, Mossman Show and regional school awards presentations.
On average, we produce about 800,000 tonnes of raw sugar each year. Raw sugar for the export market is delivered to the bulk sugar terminal at Port of Mackay and (from Mossman Mill) to Port of Cairns. This sugar is marketed on our behalf by Queensland Sugar Limited, the body responsible for marketing over 90 per cent of Queensland's export production.
Our raw sugar is marketed, predominantly in Asia, to refiners in South Korea, Indonesia, Japan and Malaysia as the primary customers. It’s also provided to Sugar Australia Joint Venture for further processing and refining.
From the sugar manufacturing process, we create the following by-products:
