About Us
Welcome

The Central Highlands covers 8,010 sq km, or 12 per cent of Tasmania's land mass, and is home to disparate, but thriving communities. It has a permanent population of 2,216 and 3,700 ratepayers, many of whom own shacks in the communities around the region's numerous spectacular lakes and mountains.

It is the birthplace of Tasmania's hydro-electric power system and home to the best trout fishing in the southern hemisphere. Our region is host to a world heritage area, two national parks and other wilderness conservation areas, to Tasmania's recreational fly fishing, hunting and bushwalking communities, and has strong agricultural, horticultural and tourism industries.

Tourism

Tourism in the Central Highlands now has its own regional brand in a significant, and bold, initiative telling the world it is the place to be. Highlands Tasmania is a new organisation, led by Central Highlands Council and including tourism associations, business groups and individual operators from across the region.

It is believed to be the first time a single council in mainland Tasmania has taken responsibility for branding outside the regional organisation structure established by tourism Tasmania.

"We listened intently to our operators who have been doing it tough and council decided it was time to take a lead and join with the industry to promote the entire region"
