History Of The Shire
Council was actively engaged in supporting and fostering substantial economic growth.
The 90's saw the development of Prime City Feedlot, the growth of the local cotton industry and a number of agricultural and horticultural developments.
Other major projects of the 1990's included:
- The potable water supplies at Goolgowi and Merriwagga
- Completion of the bitumen seal for Kidman Way
- Reconstruction of Tabbita Lane
- Establishment of the banking franchise at Hillston
- Upgrading of bush fire equipment
- Upgrading and expansion of the Hillston Caravan Park
- Technological improvements such as telemetry control for water supplies, PC computer network, electronic recordkeeping system and the establishment of a mobile base station at Hillston

Carrathool Shire consists of the town of Hillston, and the surrounding villages of Goolgowi, Merriwagga, Rankins Springs and Carrathool. The Shire boasts two rivers, two national parks, and a booming agricultural industry. From the wide open plains of Willandra National Park, to the Conapaira Ranges at Rankins Springs, the Shire offers an abundance of diversity.
Carrathool Shire is well known for its rich agricultural industry. Traditionally a grazing and cropping area, with new innovations in irrigation, the industry has now expanded into citrus, cotton, viticulture, walnuts, olives, potatoes, lettuce, almonds, cherries, corn, rice and a large cattle feedlot.

Hillston High Street Redevelopment
The reconstruction of High Street Hillston is now complete. The Street was officially reopened by the Hon John Cobb MP on Saturday 9th May 2009.
Mayor of Carrathool Shire Council, Cr Peter Laird said the multi-million dollar revitalisation of Hillston High Street was the culmination of over 12 months of concentrated effort by Carrathool Shire Council.
"Carrathool Shire Council recognised the need to freshen up the Hillston High Street and turn it into what we see today - a revitalised and vibrant place that is attracting visitors"
