Twilight House, as the organisation was first known, was first contemplated by a group of influential women in 1911. From their fund raising efforts the women purchased and opened our first Twilight home, Onslow House in Mosman. The home provided accommodation for 20 refined, educated, professional women who found themselves in the twilight of their lives with limited means and in need of a refuge from the cold comfort of the ordinary boarding house.

Today, Twilight Aged Care provides high quality residential aged care for more than 160 men and women in our homes in northern Sydney communities, employing over 160 dedicated members of staff. As a not-for-profit organisation, we are driven by our philosophy and mission to provide the highest quality integrated care and accommodation to those in our communities. Over the years, we have been privileged, through our many significant philanthropic connections, to have had a number of properties bequeathed to us. In 2015, Twilight Aged Care celebrated its centenary recognising its history and long-standing contribution to aged care services for communities living in Sydney’s north.

With Twilight being one of the many organisations established in the early twentieth century, ‘An Australian Story: A History of Twilight Aged Care 1915-2015’ occupies a small space in telling the broader story of aged care in Australia. Established by a small group of highly driven women, it was never their intention that Twilight House pursue the ambition of becoming a large-scale age care provider. Staying true to their philosophy, Twilight Aged Care grew by small increments, occupying just five homes today. Each residence has a character of its own, prioritising care for the elderly whose valued relatives and loved ones deeply appreciate Twilight’s philosophy - personal care and relationships in a homely setting cared for by trained professionals and clinicians.

Over the years, Twilight Aged Care has played an integral role in the lives of many thousands of people. This book draws on the available archives to explore some of their inspiring stories. Order your copy today to learn about the rich history of aged care in Australia and the inspiring individuals who played a fundamental role in its development.
