Nissan Australia has a very rich history, entering the Australian market in 1966 sold under the Datsun name. Datsun assembly continued in stages through the 1960’s and demand increased due to the fuel crisis of 1973. The ‘Datsun’ brand was phased out worldwide and later changed to ‘Nissan’ in the early 1980’s. Nissan Australia produced a number of popular Nissan models locally, namely the Pulsar, Pintara and Skyline. Australian manufacturing continued until 1992, with Nissan Australia becoming a full importer.
Nissan also had success in Motorsport, entering the Australian Touring Car Championship with the Nissan Skyline GT-R in 1990, winning the Bathurst 1000 race in 1991 and 1992. Affectionately known as “Godzilla” a term coined by the Australian motoring press due to the GT-R being the “monster from Japan”. The GT-R heritage still lives on today and truly embodies Nissan’s mantra; Innovation that excites.
