Ipswich

Ipswich is Queensland’s oldest provincial city. It is situated on the Bremer River, 45 minutes from Queensland’s capital of Brisbane and 1 hour from the Gold Coast. Temperatures vary from an average high of 31.6 degrees in summer to an average high of 21.7 degrees in winter.

In 1827, the town was established as a convict outstation for limestone mining and farming. It became a busy inland river port to service the booming wool and coal industries with a regular paddle steamer service established between Ipswich and Brisbane.

Ipswich is a modern city, surrounded by rich agricultural regions, also famous for its architectural and cultural heritage. Ipswich is known as the cradle of coal mining in Queensland. The mines and the RAAF Base Ambersley, manufacturing, health care and retail make up most of the workforce. The RAAF base is the largest in Australia.

Local bus and rail networks connect surrounding areas and services to Brisbane. Ipswich is easily accessible from Brisbane’s domestic and international airports. Community services include shopping centres, sporting facilities and a civic centre.
