Fremantle

Fremantle is a vibrant port city located at the mouth of the Swan River in Western Australia. It is considered to be part of the Perth metropolitan area. Temperatures vary from an average high of 28 degrees in summer to an average high of 18 degrees in winter. The sea breeze known as the ‘Fremantle Doctor’ usually arrives by afternoon, providing relief from the summer heat.

Prior to white settlement, Fremantle was inhabited by the Noongar Indigenous People. In 1829, the area was first settled by the Swan River colonists. However, it was another 100 years before Fremantle was declared a city. It was named after Captain Charles Howe Fremantle, an English naval officer.

Perth is famed for its fishing and seafood. Fishing Boat Harbour is a popular tourist attraction. With the fishing industry having links to Italian communities, a ceremony known as the "Blessing of the Fleet" is held each year. Fremantle has a strong music culture and hosts annual festivals such as the West Coast Blues and Roots Festival and the Fremantle Winter Music Festival.

Fremantle is serviced by trains, buses and ferries.
