Church History

In the spring of 1820, Joseph Smith Jr. retired to the woods near his home in Palmyra, New York, and offered a simple prayer to our Father in Heaven. This humble prayer set into motion a series of events that brought forth The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from its obscure beginnings in upstate New York to a worldwide church.

Know More About Our Church History

Joseph Smith - as prophet, teacher, and beloved leader of the Saints - was the prophet of the Restoration. His ministry was filled with events that molded him into a prophet. Through his ministry, what was then a small band of believers in 1830, has become a worldwide Church today. He accomplished his work without the advantages of schooling, property, or family prominence.

Story of Joseph Smith

Education and Literacy

When we have knowledge and wisdom, we are better able to discern truth from error and make good choices. Education and literacy are also keys to personal growth, preparation for suitable employment, building strong families, service in the Church, and making a meaningful contribution to the society in which we live.

Deseret Industries

Deseret Industries is composed of three related parts. First, trainees work, receive training, and find long-term employment. Second, the public may purchase inexpensive, quality merchandise in a clean, safe retail environment. To those in need, merchandise is provided at no cost. Third, all people may provide meaningful service through the donation of time and merchandise.

Deseret Industries is both a nonprofit, vocational rehabilitation facility and a thrift store.

We invite you to learn more about the Deseret Industries program in the following pages.

Humanitarian Services

"All about us there are many who are in need of help and who are deserving of rescue. Our mission in life, as followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, must be a mission of saving. There are the homeless, the hungry, the destitute."

President Gordon B. Hinckley, "Our Mission of Saving," Ensign, Nov. 1991, 59

For millions of people in need around the world, the humanitarian outreach program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers hope and the potential for a life that transcends disease, poverty, and despair.
