About Us

Gregson & Weight is an Australian family owned & operated funeral business. The company began as A.F. Weight & Sons at Horsham Victoria, in 1898, with three generations, Alfred, George & Stanley serving that area until 1948.

In 1957 a funeral business was bought at Williamstown, Victoria, and run by Stanley & Thelma Weight and their son Lawrence, until Lawrence was killed in 1967, aged 27 years.

Daughter Jeanette and husband John Gregson began working with Stan at Williamstown after Lawrence's death. The decision was then made in 1972 to move to the Sunshine Coast where Stan and John and their familes began Gregson & Weight Funerals to service the small coastal towns.

Registration of Death

It is a legal requirement that every death that occurs in Queensland has to be registered with the office of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Once the death is registered, a formal death certificate, which is needed in relation to any legal and estate issues, can be issued upon application.

During our initial meeting with you, we will ask you to provide the personal information required to register the death on your behalf.

To make the process easier at the time, you may wish to record this information in advance, and bring it along to your initial meeting with us.

What to do

First contact with a funeral director is usually by phone, where upon the deceased person will be removed from the place of death by our staff to our facilities with due regard for the legal requirement to do this. Usually within 24 hours, the next of kin or spokesperson will make an appointment to arrange the details of the funeral.

This can take place at one of our offices or in a home if preferred. At that meeting, the attending family member or friends will arrange for the time and place of the funeral, whether cremation or burial is preferred, whether a service will be with clergy or a celebrant officiating, and what wording and or songs / music is to be played.
